Martin Brings With Him Former Chief Counsel to the House of Representatives Ethics Committee and Federal Corruption Prosecutor Dan Schwager, and FCPA Attorney and Former Public Defender Sasha Hodge-Wren

WASHINGTON, August 4, 2015 – Miles & Stockbridge P.C. announced today that William R. “Billy” Martin, one of the country’s top trial lawyers, has joined the law firm as a principal in its Washington, D.C. office.

Martin has been recognized by the D.C. Bar Association as a “Legend of the Bar” and among his many honors, was named one of the nation’s “50 Most Influential Minority Attorneys” by The National Law Journal.

“We are thrilled to have Billy Martin and his team join our firm,” said John B. Frisch, chairman and chief executive officer of Miles & Stockbridge. “A ‘bet the company’ lawyer with a comprehensive and diverse legal background, Billy is a ‘go-to’ lawyer for entities and individuals facing high-stakes legal challenges.”

Martin’s representations have included, for example:

  • Large corporations in complex civil and criminal matters before state and federal courts, in administrative hearings, and in arbitrations;
  • High-profile clients, which have included NFL, NBA and NHL athletes and political figures; and
  • The United States House of Representatives Committee on Ethics in connection with its investigation of a member of Congress.

Martin has substantial experience with external and internal investigations. “Billy will be a natural and invaluable member of Miles & Stockbridge’s growing government contracts, compliance, and white collar practices,” said Ray Monroe, a government contracts principal who recently joined Miles & Stockbridge, along with Linda Bruggeman, from Crowell & Moring LLP. “With Billy, Linda, and our dynamic team, we have the experience and sophistication to take on the most complex and highest-profile matters.”

“Billy’s legal reputation is not only very impressive, but his work has made an indelible impact on the community at large,” said John A. Stalfort, managing principal of Miles & Stockbridge’s D.C. office. “As a past president of the Washington Bar Association, Billy is well-known for fighting for diversity and inclusion in the legal profession.”

Before entering private practice, Martin served as the Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney for D.C. and was the Attorney in charge of the United States Attorney’s Office in Dayton, Ohio. He also served as Senior Trial Attorney with the Justice Department’s Organized Crime Strike Force in San Francisco. Before starting his own firm, Martin & Gitner, in 2012, Martin was a well-respected senior partner in the Washington legal community.  Martin’s law partner, Geoff Gitner, is retiring after nearly 45 years in practice.

“In life, timing is everything,” said Martin. “Geoff and I built a very successful practice, and now he is ready for a much-deserved change. Miles & Stockbridge was looking to strengthen its white collar practice in its growing D.C. office and I was looking to expand my litigation team by joining a firm with a deep bench of national trial lawyers. Miles & Stockbridge provides that opportunity.”

Two of Martin’s colleagues from Martin & Gitner also have joined Miles & Stockbridge.

Daniel A. Schwager, who joined the firm as counsel, is a former Staff Director and Chief Counsel to the House of Representatives Committee on Ethics. Schwager has focused the majority of his career on corruption and ethics matters at the highest levels of government and in the securities industry. Beginning at the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, Schwager was recruited to the Official Corruption Unit, focusing on allegations against the NYPD and other law enforcement agencies. At the Public Integrity Section of the U.S. Department of Justice, he continued to focus on internal investigations and public corruption, litigating significant cases in the public eye and handling highly sensitive matters regarding campaign finance violations and prosecutorial misconduct. After the Justice Department, Schwager became Counsel to the Senate Ethics Committee, and later Chief Counsel and Staff Director of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Ethics. As the only non-partisan staff director in the House, Schwager advised both the Chairman and Ranking Member, and the other eight members of the bi-partisan committee. Most recently, he investigated and prosecuted allegations of ethical misconduct and regulatory violations by licensed brokers, dealers and firms engaged in the securities industry as senior counsel with the Office of Enforcement of FINRA, and taught legal ethics at American University’s Washington College of Law. “Dan is highly respected in Washington for his integrity and his skill in criminal investigations and ethics matters. While just out of Government service, he has already begun to build an impressive practice on Capitol Hill,” said Martin. “Dan’s experience in the Public Integrity Section of the Department of Justice adds tremendous value to our government contracts and internal investigations practice,” said Monroe.

Sasha E. Hodge-Wren also joined Miles & Stockbridge as counsel. Throughout her career, Hodge-Wren has focused on both criminal and civil litigation. She has represented a range of clients in class actions, internal investigations, criminal defense, civil litigation, and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (“FCPA”) due diligence, training, and investigations. Her practice has included representation in both federal and state courts. In criminal matters, Hodge-Wren has successfully represented clients from inception of the case, through plea negotiations and trial.

Hodge-Wren has worked with Martin on and off for the last six years. She initially worked with Martin in private practice as an associate in the Global Litigation Group of a large D.C. firm. From there, Hodge-Wren continued to hone her skills as a trial attorney while serving as an assistant public defender in Prince George’s County, Maryland before re-joining Martin’s firm in 2013. Martin calls Hodge-Wren “an amazing asset in any trial or investigation.”
