Matthew T. Wagman is the Co-Leader of the Products Liability and Mass Tort Practice Group and Co-Chair of the Firm’s Manufacturing and Distribution Industry Team (MAD-IT).
Matt is a litigator who focuses his efforts on solving his client’s business problems. Although his litigation/trial practice is concentrated on the defense of personal injury, property damage, and contract claims for numerous large, mid-size, and small companies, Matt knows the importance of acting as a business counselor first and a litigator second. Matt is National Coordinating Counsel for an international power tool manufacturer as well as Regional Counsel for numerous Fortune 500 manufacturing clients in toxic tort matters arising out of alleged exposures to such substances as asbestos, silica, vinyl chloride, wood dust, metal dust, and benzene. In that capacity, Matt regularly appears in the state and federal courts in Maryland and Washington D.C.
Matt is a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC)—an invitation-only, peer-reviewed association of corporate and insurance defense lawyers and insurance executives. Through IADC, he participates in high-level education and professional development opportunities with other law firm partners, senior counsel in corporate law departments, and executives working with the largest corporations around the world.
Although much of his practice has focused on the defense of toxic tort matters, Matt also leads the Firm’s international Manufacturer/Supplier Cost Recovery/Prevention practice. This practice focuses on assisting our clients in contract formation with their key business partners to either protect the client from risk or to aid the client in pursing their contractual remedies, including recovering costs they have incurred as a result of defects in component parts, materials, or even complete products purchased from their business partners. Matt works with these clients to protect their business from these types of claims or, conversely, to enforce the client’s indemnity rights, while at the same time minimizing the impact on the more important overall business relationship.
Matt also regularly represents financial institutions in all levels of consumer credit-card disputes, ranging from state and federal lawsuits, class action litigation, and alternative dispute resolution.
Matt has been recognized in the 2019 Edition of The Best Lawyers in America for Product Liability Litigation and holds an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell.
