Melissa K. Nelson

Associate Counsel

Melissa K. Nelson is a member of the firm’s Real Estate practice group in our Washington, D.C. office.

Melissa has extensive experience advising clients on all stages of small and large real property acquisitions and dispositions, including due diligence, closing, construction, financing, development and project operations. She has developed a broad expertise in advising developers, builders and resort owners and operators, including in the areas of planning, development and operation of resorts, master planned communities (single family home residential, commercial, and large scale mixed use) and various types of condominium developments, including condo-hotels. She has been involved in representing lenders in financings for small and large scale real estate projects of varying purposes. Melissa advises national and regional banks, bulk purchasers and investors in connection with successor developer liability issues, foreclosures, community restructuring issues and other issues common to distressed properties. She is skilled at leading mediations and settlement negotiations while defending developers in litigation relating to various real estate related issues, including breach of contract, false advertising claims and interpretation of complex association documents. Further, she is experienced in obtaining federal trademark registrations and land sales registrations at the federal and state levels (including preparation of HUD filings and out of state registrations). 

Melissa received her J.D., with Honors from Emory University School of Law, where she was Executive Symposium Editor of the Emory Law Journal. Melissa is a graduate of the University of Virginia.
