James Garland To Be Honored with “Man for All Seasons” Award by St. Thomas More Society of Maryland
Miles & Stockbridge is pleased to announce that James P. Garland, a lawyer in the firm’s Baltimore office, will receive the “Man for All Seasons” Award from the St. Thomas More Society of Maryland, an organization of members from the Catholic legal community.
Garland represents clients in the areas of telecommunications, general business litigation, and labor and employment, and is deputy general counsel of the firm. A fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers since 1981, he has longtime litigation experience in state and federal courts.
Garland will accept the award at the Society’s 59th Annual Red Mass and “Man for All Seasons” Award Banquet on the evening of Thursday, October 19 in the Catholic Community of St. Francis Xavier, where Garland is a long-time parishioner.
“Jim has been a mentor to so many throughout his remarkable legal career, in his alumni involvement with Loyola Blakefield, Loyola University Maryland and Villanova University, and through his service to the Catholic Church,” said John E. “Jack” McCann, a principal with Miles & Stockbridge and president of the St. Thomas More Society of Maryland. “No one is more deserving of the ‘Man for All Seasons’ honor than Jim.”
Garland has been named a Knight Commander of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem for distinguished service to the Catholic Church. He is a graduate of Loyola High School (now Loyola Blakefield) and Loyola College (now Loyola University Maryland). He is past president of the university’s national alumni association and former board chair of its Maryland alumni chapter. Garland received the school’s alumni laureate award in 1996. He earned his J.D. from Villanova University School of Law in 1956 as part of its inaugural graduating class and, in 1963, was the first alumnus to be appointed to the Board of Consultors of the School of Law. He now serves as a Life Member of the Board of Consultors, as well as a frequent moot court panelist. In 2015, Villanova’s alumni association presented him with the Gerald Abraham Award for distinguished service to the law school.
In May, Garland was honored as the 2017 Senior Lawyer of the Year by the Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA). As a three-term chairman of the MSBA’s special committee on law practice quality, Garland sought to improve the working lives and professional satisfaction of younger lawyers and was one of the principal forces in the drafting and publication of the Law Practice Quality Guidelines, which set forth a framework for mentorship within firms. For many years, he has served as a presenter for the MSBA’s professionalism course, seeking to instill an enhanced sense of professional obligation and legal ethics among applicants to the Maryland Bar.
Garland chaired the committee on lawyer-client relationships for the American College of Trial Lawyers, which honored him with a citation for outstanding leadership. He is a past member of the organization’s Maryland state committee and continues to serve on its national moot court competition committee. He also has served on the boards of the Maryland chapter of the Federal Bar Association and the University of Baltimore’s Hoffberger Center for Professional Ethics.
He also was the founding chairman of the Baltimore Rowing Club and is a member of the Barristers’ Law Club.
