After my first summer, I finally had some inkling about what real lawyers did on a day-to-day basis and whether I could be any good at it. When I turned in my first project (a motion for summary judgment), the partner I did it for asked me, "Is this any good?" When I said I thought it was, he signed it on the spot and had it filed with the court. It was terrifying but exhilarating. When I got back to school, he sent me a copy of the order granting the motion with a nice note. More so than any law school grade, or law review, or moot court experience, I felt totally empowered and felt that the firm wanted me to succeed as much as I wanted to. Now that I 'm a partner and get to work with the Summer Associates, I work hard to de-mystify the process and give them real-world opportunities to use the tools they have to make a direct impact.
