Some of the challenges lateral lawyers face when joining the firm are navigating the firm’s procedures, meeting their new colleagues, and finding ways to collaborate to generate more business. Recognizing that full and substantial integration and acceptance of lawyers and their practices into all facets of the firm’s business development culture and social milieu is a necessary extension of the lateral hiring process, Miles & Stockbridge follows a customized Lateral Integration Plan for all its lateral principals.
Throughout our discussions and then negotiations with the firm, the managing lawyers and senior management struck an admirable balance between patience and persistence. They were all readily accessible and responsive, they were very open about sharing information concerning the firm's clients, finances, strategic vision and culture, and delivered on all of their promises in terms of support and compensation. I do not think the firm could have done a better job in facilitating the admittedly burdensome task of moving laterally and transferring clients to a new firm.
